Assorted Post

Well, here's a few things...

First, an AC unit in the wall of my dining room went kaput, so after it was deemed unrepairable, Dad and I removed it and temporarily patched it, with plans to seal it up this evening.

Instead, he sealed it up while I was at work.

What AC?

So, that left my evening open to hanging out with Rev and Henning. What did we do with our time? Unhealthy pizza, salsa making, and ROCK BAND 2!

Doesn't this say it all?

My throne.

Good times were had, good songs were rocked out to, and some were quite surprising. Still, I need to get better and get the skills up a notch. It's good to have a night with the guys. Our band, "Snatch Grabber" (Thanks, Rev), will be rocking again soon, this I can assure you.

I'm hoping the Saturday plans I booked will follow through, and good times will be had then too. Everyone's got things on their minds, and new discoveries are made every day. Let's hope we can all learn from them.

Downtown - Detroit Beer Company / Slows

Since I had today off from the office, I hit the gym and spent a good part of the day in downtown Detroit, enjoying the scenery and partaking in local business wares. I met up with some friends at the Greektown casino, and parked in the new structure. Let me tell you, it is sheer brilliance. I love the fact that the signs tell you how many vehicles are parked on the floor. Very nice.

I met up with my friends, popped onto the People Mover, and walked around Comerica Park and Ford Field. From there we went over to the Detroit Beer Company. Totally awesome.

Detroit Beer Company!

The Detroit Beer Company is located near Comerica Park, in the space which was once occupied by the IO -- a hole in the wall coffee/soda place which catered to the emo and indie bands in the late nineties. They re-did the interior, and it's awesome now.

Detroit Beer Company!

Detroit Beer Company Sampler!

The beer sampler is five of their on-site brewed beers in sampler glasses. With eight beers on tap today, we had to add a couple more in there. I stayed away from the Broadway Light, but I might have to try it next time. Every other beer was quite tasty, so I'd assume it's delicious as well.

After that, we popped down to Slows at the far end of Corktown. The place is marked by a large black and red sign, and a very interesting wood door. I really should have snapped a few photos, but hunger was setting in... Inside, the atmosphere was awesome. Everything was brick or wood, and the place radiated the scent of BBQ sauce. Pork, ham, chicken, and ribs were on the menu, and you could smell it. I ordered "The Reason" -- a pulled pork sandwich, along with cole slaw and cornbread.

"The Reason" was delicious... served on two slices of Texas toast, and piled with a healthy mound of pork and the side of cole slaw apparently ON the sandwich. I didn't get that, though. Why put it ON the sandwich when you bill it as a side? I've also learned cornbread is not something I'm really hip on, but that's okay. The big irk about this place was that they had five BBQ sauces on the table, but they never cooked the food with it. Isn't that the epicenter of BBQ sauce cooking? That way, the flavor really gets into the meat.

I enjoyed the food, but it wasn't as good as it was made out to be. Could have been a bad night to go. But you have to find it interesting that they do not place carry-out orders -- only dine-in.

So, that's today's excursion to downtown Detroit. I have to say, good times were had.

Friend Profile: Stepho

Steph and I
Myself and Stepho in a car - Oct. 3, 2005

I have this friend of mine. It's the illustrious Stepho.

"The Stephinator" and I met on an online bulletin board called MoonBored. While she was one of the resident hotties (ie good looking female members), she was also wise beyond her years and had some crazy crack wit. The first time I met Stepho in person was at a New Years Eve party in Lorain, Ohio. We hung out and had some good times until she had to take off.

The next time I saw Stepho was on May fourth of 2002. She provided me with a couch to sleep on in Youngstown while I was doing my first coaster trip of the year. We spent a few hours sitting and talking. This then led to more frequent visits once she moved to Elyria, Ohio.

Steph's been a fantastic friend with an amazing head on her shoulders. (although, as she is dubbed the "Saucy Red Temptress", one can safely assume she's quite attractive too.) She's incredibly wise, practical, and someone who would gladly shiv someone for a friend.

Stepho is a strong person in the face of adversity. (...even if her fists of fury barely registered more than a chuckle on a cold October day at Cedar Point...) Steph managed to stay stronger than I could have ever thought when she faced health issues and subsequent organ transplantation. Very few people in my life have experienced everything that she has, and she still presses on -- a leader armed with knitting needles, schnapps, and a couple kitties.

She's a proud parent of her kitties and pup (Louise, Jerome, and Steve, respectively), a proud parent of sorts to her husband, Garvin, and a wonderful chef. She's a hard worker and dedicated to her friends and promises, as bitter as some of them can make her. She still finds time in her busy schedule to blog and take photos, over at ActionFigureStepho.com.

Steph's an amazing friend, and someone I feel I can trust all my worldly secrets and bits of knowledge with. She is my Keeper of Records (as I am of hers), and I'm glad to have met her and had her show me everything in her world.

Stepho, my friend, I am honored to know you. This is just a small mention of everything that makes you rock. Stepho, much love and rock! Rock on!
